Beta Program
This page here is for beta program users. Bugs, updates and compatibility matrices will be posted here.
Announcements
For old announcements, please see the NeTV announcement archive.
March 9: Major release pushed, current latest is 43. Please see NeTV release 43 notes.
October 3: Major release pushed, Current latest is 12. Update should be automatic. Please see NeTV release 12 notes.
October 4: Minor release pushed, current latest is 14. Minor bug fixed in control panel, but the primary reason for push is to upgrade factory test infrastructure in the image.
October 20: Major release pushed, Current latest is 19. Update should be semi-automatic, it will trigger automatically but you will probably have to reboot it manually. Update takes around 15 minutes to apply, it's a big one. Please see NeTV release 19 notes.
- Note: you may have to manually power cycle your device at the conclusion of the update.
- Note: HTTP API has been refactored, please see NeTV web services
- Because this is a major update, it takes a while on "finalizing updates" stage (it is configuring a hundred or so new kernel modules). The chroma key is off in this state, so you will see a big pink screen during this time. Sorry for the inconvenience.
- ssh is now off by default, you need to go to settings->enable SSH to turn it on.
October 27: Minor release pushed, current latest is 20. Please see NeTV release 20 notes.
October 28: Minor release pushed, current latest is 21. Please see NeTV release 21 notes.
November 15: Heads up, a new major release is on the way that will break any mods. We are migrating docroot to a git-managed copy on the device so control panel updates are transparent every time the device is rebooted. If you are developing a custom app, please see NeTV tricks for ways to set an alternate docroot.
November 17: Major release pushed, current latest is 22. Please see NeTV release 22 notes. Major internal structural changes to the UI subsystem.
November 18: Minor release pushed, current latest is 25. Fixed issue with /psp/homepage to allow files to be specified and not just URLs.
Confirmed Issues
Feature Discussion
- Feature request: make rate of scrolling configurable
- Feature request: add PAL support to enable EU cable box compatibility
- Feature request: add iPhone support
Compatibility Matrix
columns for source compatibility should be: Device description, make, model; and auto-res, forced 480p, forced 720p, compatible; and 1080p truecinema compatible; comments. Numbers in parenthesis indicate the firmware revision that a particular compatibility state was verified in.
compatibility states should be yes, no, and intermittant/partial
Sources
Device | Fw rev | Resolution | Compatibility | Notes
Tivo Series 3 | unknown | forced 720p | intermittant (11) | I could get NeTV into mode where it just showed black background, usually by switching video inputs on TV and coming back to the Tivo+NeTV chain. [update: this happens on occasion when switching video inputs to TivoS3, not a dominant operating issue]
PS3 CECH-2501A | Version 3.56 | forced 480p | yes
PS3 CECH-2501A | Version 3.56 | forced 720p | yes
PS3 CECH-2501A | Version 3.56 | forced 1080p | no (11) | NeTV does not support 1080p60
PS3 CECH-2501A | Version 3.56 | auto | no (11) | NeTV goes into self-timing mode. However if I connect the PS3 to the TV directly, there is no signal, too. I have to reboot the PS3 then can set the resolution back to manually.

Sony Blueray DVD Player BDP-S370 | MO3.R.511 | auto + truecimena | yes | NeTV will support 1080p24 for bluray movies

LG Network Blueray Disc/DVD Player BD550 | Main Ver: BD4.380.00; Servo Ver: H08LGN0902 | forced 720p | intermittent (11) | NeTV becomes snowy when changing the resolution to 720p sometimes.

AKIRA DVD Player DVD-K3528HD | unknown | forced 720p | yes
AKIRA DVD Player DVD-K3528HD | unknown | forced 1080p | no
Apple TV version 2 | unknown | all | no (11) / fixed >11 | This product is non-compliant to spec. EESS signalling is too early, causing loss of cipher lock. A work-around is implemented and will be deployed in firmware versions greater than 11. Not quite sure how ATV2 works with other devices since they are so far out of spec on EESS timing.
Acer Aspire 5942G | Windows 7 | 720p native | yes
Lenovo Thinkpad T520 | Windows 7 | 720p native | yes | requires displayport to HDMI adapter
Apple desktop products | any | 720p native | no | Apple munges the timing of the HDMI output so that it is not a CEA standard mode, NeTV cannot recognize it. Apple products suck for inter-operability. |
Sinks
Display | Resolution | Compatibility | Notes |
Toshiba 40G300U | forced 720p | yes
LG FLATRON W2261VP-PF | yes
VIZIO M221NV | yes | ||
LG 42LW5700TA | yes | ||
Sony Bravia 32CX520 | yes | This TV is very picky about the +5V input. For proper operation you must use the provided power supply and power cable, otherwise the resistive loss and/or tolerance of a typical USB power supply and cable can put you outside its accepted range. |
